The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reported on Tuesday that a total of 18,934 motor vehicles were apprehended in May for not being registered or having expired registration papers.
In a statement, LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said that two and three-wheelers accounted for most of these illegal vehicles: 12,206 were motorcycles while 3,105 were tricycles.
“Our campaign will remain aggressive until such time that we compel these [drivers] to comply with their obligation to have their motor vehicles registered because it is through registration that motor vehicles are checked for roadworthiness,” Mendoza added.

Also apprehended were at least 1,800 vans and more than 1,000 private vehicles, in addition to passenger jeepneys and buses, and trucks, he said.
According to the LTO chief, their Calabarzon regional office accounted for the majority of the apprehensions at 9,906, followed by the Mimaropa and Cagayan Valley regional offices.
The LTO has been cracking down on unregistered motor vehicles in coordination with the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies.
Mendoza urged drivers to register their motor vehicles to avoid hefty fines, adding that violators face a P10,000 fine.
